Land Acknowledgement for High School Shop Class – Merritt, BC
Before we begin today, I want to take a moment to recognize that we are learning and working on the traditional, unceded territories of the Nlaka’pamux and Syilx (Okanagan) peoples.
The land we build on, the tools we use, and the skills we’re learning all take place on land that has been cared for by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Both the Nlaka’pamux and Syilx Nations have a deep and ongoing connection to this land, and it’s important that we acknowledge and respect that history.
In our shop class, we work with our hands to design, build, and problem-solve—skills that reflect traditional knowledge and craftsmanship. Let this be a reminder that learning is not just about projects and tools, but also about understanding the land we’re on and the communities who have shaped it.
We give thanks for the opportunity to be here and commit to learning with respect, responsibility, and awareness of the land and its original stewards.
Tell Me About Yourself
My name is Rory Campbell, I have recently completed the BETT program at TRU in Kamloops. I spent 25 years at HVC mine in Logan Lake where I completed an apprenticeship for a millwright red seal. I have spent many years gathering knowledge of the trade, I worked with and trained apprentices, I was a crew supervisor where I able to work with and share knowledge of the job and also spent time as a planner where I learned how to be organized and prepared to handle any issues that may arise unexpectantly.
I have always been interested in coaching sports to children. Mostly it has been hockey where I have coached players from 5- to 25-year-olds, including minor hockey, U16 team Okanagan female team, and most recently the University team from TRU. I also spent 5 years as the club hockey president which has taught me how to deal with and communicate to parents or guardians.
I most recently taught millwright apprentices at TRU in 2024, but I have decided that I would prefer to teach at the high school shop level in trades. My experience with high school teaching has been a month of volunteer time and 4 months of practical time. My personality has suited this environment as I have made good connections, and I enjoy taking kids from where they are and watching the enjoyment and pride that they have when they learn something new and succeed at it.
